Receding gums is a common condition that can occur for various reasons, including aggressive tooth brushing, poor oral hygiene, smoking, and gum disease. Gum grafting restores a natural, healthy gumline by placing tissue grafts at the site of recession. Healthy gums reduce the risk of decay, infection, and loose teeth.

Tongue-tie and lip-tie in children and adults causes restricted movement of the tongue and upper lip. By releasing the frenulum, the tissue that connects the tongue and lip to the mouth, greater movement is allowed for eating, swallowing, and speaking. A frenectomy also reduces the risk for tooth decay, gum recession, and a gapped smile.

A “gummy” smile can leave a patient feeling self-conscious and can increase the risk of decay and infection. Crown lengthening removes the excess gum tissue and reshapes the bone around teeth if necessary, to create a symmetrical gum line and proportional tooth-to-gum ratio.

Scaling and root planing is the first non-surgical treatment for gum disease and is considered a “deep cleaning” for your teeth and gums. Scaling removes the bacterial plaque from the teeth at and below the gumline. Root planing smooths the rough edges of the tooth roots so healthy gums can reattach.

Advanced cases of gum disease require surgical treatment to restore gum health. Osseous surgery involves gently flapping back the gum tissues to gain access to the tooth roots and damaged bone. Next, the bacteria, plaque, and tartar are cleared away, the bone smoothed, and diseased gums trimmed. Healthy gums are sutured in place to allow healing and reattachment.

After gum disease treatment, periodontal maintenance every 3-4 months is recommended to maintain healthy gums. This treatment involves deep cleaning teeth to keep bacterial plaque from accumulating in the periodontal pockets and reinfecting the gum tissues.

When suspicious colors or textures are noticed inside your mouth or on your tongue, they should be evaluated immediately. We offer oral biopsies in our office and complete this procedure by removing a portion of the suspicious tissue. A positive or negative result will be confirmed through a local medical lab.
